Rumor has it Charles Dickens was paid by the word. While not technically correct, he
was paid by the 'installment'. Dickens wrote his novels to appear as a series of installments or episodes. This created a rather dramatic way of making sure readers kept reading. He'd end an episode with a cliff-hanger type ending, leaving his readers wanting to know more about what happened next to their beloved characters. When all the episode are put in to one novel, however, it can feel as if he were paid by the word!
