Romeo and Juliet #5: Final Projects

“For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo."

- William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, 5.3

You’ve not only read a play about family, love, and dating in 14th century Italy but you’ve also learned some historical facts about Shakespeare and Elizabethan England.

You are to choose one of the following projects to do and turn in to Mr. Shelby.  As always, do your best work.  I expect proper writing style, grammar, punctuation, etc.  Do your own work!  Sources must be properly cited in proper MLA format using Son of Citation Machine; no plagiarism.  If you choose to work with a partner, you must get permission from Mr. Shelby before you begin.

Projects will be assessed on content, visual appeal, creativity, difficulty, and neatness.  Written work must be typed!

All projects must include a work’s cited page.  I want to know where you found your information!

1.  Costume Book

Although the play occurred in fourteenth-century Italy, the actors in Shakespeare’s time would have worn Elizabethan costumes.  Make a costume book that contains a minimum of one authentic (based on research) costume for Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, Prince Escalus, Nurse, Friar Laurence, Lord Capulet, Lord Montague, Lady Capulet, and Lady Montague.  Each costume should be labeled according to the character, act, and scene.  Include a one-paragraph explanation of each costume.

2.  The Globe Theater

Research Shakespeare’s Globe Theater.  Draw a detailed blueprint or build a scale model of the Globe Theatre.  Your blueprint or model should have the various parts of the Globe labeled.   Type a two to four-page paper that gives the history and explains the theatre.

3.  Doll costumes

Design and sew a minimum of three doll costumes representing characters in the play.  The dolls must be dressed in the costumes and labeled according to character, act, and scene.  You should include a one-page paper that explains each costume.

4.  Set Design

Design five scenes from Romeo and Juliet.  You may do so using posters or dioramas.  Please label each scene according to the scene and act of the play.  Be sure all scenes are presented in chronological order.  Each scene should include a one-half page explanation.

5.  Scene quilt

Select and depict twelve or sixteen scenes from the play for a multiple panel quilt.  You may use fabric or paper.  Each panel should have an illustration about the play as well as a caption that includes the act, scene, and quote about the scene.  Each panel will have a border.  You may sew or use string to create a large wall hanging.  Be sure your panels are in chronological order!

6.  Romeo & Julie Puppet Show

Select a scene with a minimum of four characters from the play.  Make puppets to represent all the characters in the scene.  When making your puppets, be creative!  You should include a background for your scene.  You will present your puppet show to the class. Turn in a one-page paper that includes the act and the scene numbers of the selected scene, a detailed summary of the scene, and an explanation of why you designed the puppets to look the way they look.

7.   Individual Performance

Memorize and perform two to three monologues/soliloquies.  Type a one to two-page paper explaining why these lines are important and explicate the lines (tell what the lines mean).

8: Group Performance.  Three members may get together and choose a scene and perform it.  Each member should type a one to two-page paper describing why they chose to perform the specific scene and why they chose to perform each line the way they did.

9.  Comic Book

Using either modern English or Shakespearean English, design an illustrated comic book which tells the story of Romeo and Juliet.   Minimum number of pages for book—15

10.  Board Game

Develop a board game based on the story of Romeo and Juliet.  Include all game pieces and directions.  The game should be enjoyable and educational.  You will be expected to demonstrate the game and show classmates how it works.

11.  Song Writing

Write a song, rap, or hip hop about Romeo and Juliet.  Display the words of the song on a poster or scroll.  Perform the song to the class.

12.  Dance

Research Elizabethan dances.  Perform the dance for the class.  Be sure to include the music!  Extra consideration give if performed in costume!  Write a 1 page paper on the history of Elizabethan dancing.

13.  Independent Project

Develop a project idea of your own.  Think computer, website, video, sound recording, etc.  Clear the project with me, and then complete the project.
